Violence: NHRC to establish shelter homes for victims

Due to the frequent abuse of domestic violence, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is to collaborate with International Federation of Female Lawyers to establish shelter homes forvictims of domestic violence, especially women and children.
The Executive Secretary, NHRC,Tony Ojukwu Esq. stated that both organizations have complementary functions and will work to achieve the set mandate when the commission officially received the Officials of FIDA (Abuja branch) on a courtesy visit recently in Abuja
“Acquiring a shelter home is a laudable effort and the Commission willbe willing to work with FIDA in this area as we also hope to benefit from the project,” Ojukwu said.
He further said the Commission had been desirous of acquiring a shelter home in view of the numerous cases of victims of domestic violence that inundate the Commission.
He stated that the Commission has always partnered with FIDA sayingthat in the North East the Commission is working effectively with FIDA in the counter insurgency issues and humanitarian support.
Corroborating the Executive Secretary’s position on the imperatives of shelter homes, the Director, Women, Children and other Vulnerable Groups, Barrister Aver Gaver said the Commission, on regular basis comes across women who need to be moved from their immediate environment stressing the important need for shelter.
