Volleyball : Sunshine, Nigeria Army battle for top spot on Day 7

Nigeria Army and Sunshine Spikers of Ondo will look horns on the final day of the first phase of the Nigeria volleyball division one league in Ilorin, Kwara state.

Nigeria Army and Sunshine Spikers have won eight consecutive matches at the ongoing league happening at the Indoor Sports Hall of the University of Ilorin.

Nigeria Army beat stubborn Niger Brass 3-1 (20-25, 25-12, 26-24, 25-21) while Sunshine Spikers defeated Dynamics of Anambra 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-21).

The head coach of Sunshine Spikers, Adeniyi Adekalu said his team will give Nigeria Army a good fight on Saturday.

Adekalu said Sunshine Spikers will eventually return to the Premier League where they belong.

“The Nigeria Army cannot stop my boys when we meet tomorrow (Saturday) on the court. I have studied their game, we give it to them the way the bring the game.

“This team has been together since 2008 and have gone for championships in Mali (2009), Togo, Egypt and Tunisia. There is no special team at the Nigeria Volleyball  Premier League because we played Customs in Port Harcourt last year and beat them 3-1. The Premier League should expect us after the conclusion of the division one”,  he added.

COAS Spikers and Sunshine Spikers are currently unbeaten at the ongoing Nigeria Volleyball Division one League in Ilorin.

COAS Spikers spanked Imo state 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-21) while Sunshine Spikers beat Kada Kings 3-1 (25-22, 21-25, 27-25, 25-16) to win their seventh consecutive league matches respectively.

The Head coach of COAS Spikers, Elishama Elam told newsmen in Ilorin that he feels great winning his seventh match adding that Nigeria Army team deserves to be in the Nigeria Volleyball Premier League.

He revealed that the team performance in the division one can be attributed to the seven month camping exercise embarked by the team in Zaria, Kaduna state.

Elam said, “I feel excited winning the match against Imo state; this means the Nigeria Army is currently unbeaten at this ongoing league.

“I will give it to the Nigeria Army for keeping us in camp for seven month because it has helped us understand our strengths and weaknesses”.

“My team belongs to the Nigeria Volleyball Premier League and by the grace of God, this team will play at the 2020 league”, he said

The national team coach stated that his next matches against Niger Brass and Sunshine Spikers will not be a threat.

 “I do not see a threat as far as this league is concerned; we are going to face both teams squarely”, he added.
