Imo: Voter apathy mars Okigwe North Federal Constituency re-run

The Okigwe North Federal Constituency re-run election which took place Saturday was marred by voter apathy.

Blueprint correspondent observed that the number of voters who would have come out to vote under normal circumstances reduced drastically as people went about their normal businesses.

When they came eventually, it was one at a time, thereby giving the polling officers who were all youth corpers enough time to attend to them.

However, the election went peaceful in some booths while in some other booths it was marred with violence.

In Umunkwo Ward 004 at the Central School Umunkwo in Isiala Mbano, some youth stormed the area with matchetes and carried voting materials away.

Blueprint gathered that the polling officers lost their phones, shoes and other personal effects in the process.

The same thing happened at booth 016, Umuezefeke Ugiri Oka Ward in Isiala Mbano where some miscreants tried to negotiate with a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) agent, Opara Chibueze.

When the negotiation could not work out, they left with the materials. The incumbent representative, Hon. Obinna Onwubuariri, was short of words when he was approached for comment on the issue, especially as the booths were  said to be his strongholds.

At Orori community in the same local government area, the exercise was peaceful. A community leader in the area, Chief Lawson Anato aka Abidjan, said the community placed a N50,000 fine on anybody who may want to cause problem during the exercise which made people to be peaceful.

While Hon. Joel Mbachu, the Executive Chairman of the LGA under Rochas Okorocha administration described the election as the best he has witnessed in his life, especially as it unified different political heavy weights and some parties to work for the APC candidate, Mrs Miriam Odinaka Onuoha, whom he described as a philanthropist and care giver.

He said the expectation of the people of Okigwe North Federal Constituency was getting quality representation from the would-be winner of the rerun election by making sure that good roads and steady electricity are provided and the teeming population of the youth get employment.
