WAEC, NECO: Zamfara registers 25, 000, negotiates N1 bn debt settlement

Zamfara state government has completed registration of 25,000 SS 3 students to sit for 2020/2021 WAEC examinations.

The state Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ibrahim Abdullahi, in an interview with newsmen in his office, said the registration followed an agreement reached with the WAEC authorities on the modalities for paying outstanding backlog.

“Due to the huge debt of over N1 billion Zamfara state owes WAEC, the commission decided to block our students but with our concern for educational development we have opened negotiations with WAEC to allow us register our students for the 2020/2021 examination,”  he added.

He said WAEC had earlier placed a blackout on Zamfara state due to the failure of the immediate past administration to settle examination fees for several years.

The commissioner said the state government resolved to approach WAEC authorities for dialogue and reconciliation and reached agreement on the modalities to pay the outstanding debt.

He said the state government would settle examination fees for all  the 25,000 students registered for the 2020/2021 examination.

He said the state government had granted a standing order for the payment of N50 million to WAEC on a monthly basis with a view to settling the huge debt.

Abdullahi further said the same method would be adapted to other examination bodies such as NECON and NABTEB.

He said under the arrangement, an already substantial amount of money had been paid to NECON.
