WAEC/SSCE: Rep register 500 indigent students at N12.05m in Plateau

Not fewer than five hundred indigent secondary school students, benefited from a federal lawmaker in Plateau state who registered them for the West African Examination Council (WAEC).

The lawmaker Honourable Haruna Maitala, representing Jos North/Bassa federal constituency, while making the disbursement of the registration fees, Wednesday, at the his constituency office in Jos, said education is top priority in his programme.

 Maitala, represented by his seniour legislative aide, Abdulqadir Hassan, said the sum of N12.5m, is been disbursed in the phase one of  the educational scheme.

He said, “This is a serious project and we are here to assist the less privileged in order for them to  register for their SSCE,” he said.

The lawmaker said the selection of beneficiaries was on merit and  done to pick from ac “those that will not be able to pay from the  grassroots.

“We are just starting the programme and we shall later select others to register for the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), examination,” he said.

Maitala, further said as part of his educational programme and within his budgetary strength,  the constituency office  will soon embark on giving out scholarships to less privileged students who are unable to settle their school fees.

“It is also part of our programme to renovates some dilapidated structures and also provide learning materials to some indigent students,” he said .

The Jos North, vice chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Izekeil Izang, urged the beneficiaries to work hard towards successful results in  the examination in order   to justify the  effort of the lawmaker.

He said: “This programme by the lawmaker is the kind of empowerment that no one will take  it off from you.”

Mr Izang said the APC will continue to presents persons with milk of human kindness that will carry out humane programmes.

Some of the beneficiaries expressed appreciation over the gesture. They said  it comes at a time when they are trying to raise money for registration.

Ms Zainab Ibrahim said: “I was picked to come for free registration of SSCE, it is paid for by Honourable Haruna Maitala. Before now, I was thinking on how to get the money to pay for my registration.”

Similarly, Ms. Juliet Joseph said time has come for her to seat for WAEC examination, “but I don’t have the money. I was giving a form to fill from the office of Haruna Maitala for free and I was happy.”
