We assassinated Sheikh Albani, says Shekau

Boko Haram yesterday announced that it was responsible for the assassination of a prominent Zaria-based cleric, Sheikh Muhammad Auwal Adam Albani.

The sect issued a video clip last night in which its leader, Imam Abubakar Shekau, made the announcement.
Sheikh Albani was killed together with his wife and son on the night of Saturday, February 1, 2014 by unidentified gunmen on motorcycles as they drove home from the venue of a sermon which he conducted in Zaria, Kaduna state.
Albani, who had criticised the militant group and given his support to the military campaign against it, died shortly after he was admitted to hospital.
Boko Haram was immediately suspected of carrying out the killings.

In his video announcement last night, Shekau also claimed responsibility for the recent attacks in Borno state in which over a hundred people were killed.
He vowed that the sect would soon assassinate some prominent Nigerian politicians who he said were promoting the ideology of democracy in the country.
