Weightlifting C’ship: Team Nigeria emerges 4th best

Nigeria Women Weightlifting team has emerged 4th out of over 40 countries that participated at the 6th International Solidarity Weightlifting Championship in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.


Nigerian female lifters won a total number of 6 gold medals at at the meet which served as part of qualifers for this year’s Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.
Adijat Adenike Olarinoye won three gold in the 55kg category while Rafiatu Folashade Lawal got three gold too in the 59kg cadre


The only male member of the team and captain, Augustina Nkem Nwokolo clinched three bronze medals in the 49kg class to end on a good note for Nigeria.
Olarinoye Adenike Adijat who competed in the 55 kg category has emerged the best female athlete  during the championship.
Technical Director of the team, Christopher Nwadei expressed happiness with the country’s lifters’ abilities to garner the medals on the first day. 


Nwadei who was excited with the haul of said the feat was possible because the Nigerian lifters are in good shape, adding that he is happy and hope to see them clinch more podium spots, with better performances and the prime focus of getting tickets to the Tokyo 2020 Games.
A total of 5 weightlifters were part of Nigeria contingent to the championship in Uzbekistan and the athletes will also be attending the African Championships in April to book an Olympic tickets.
The Nigerian contingent will return home on Friday.
