We‘ll guide against misappropriation, mismanagement of forfeited assets – FG

The Inter-ministerial committee on the disposal of assets forfeited to the federal government Tuesday assured Nigerians that the committee would ensure that the assets were neither misappropriated nor mismanaged.

As a way of ensuring a radical departure from the past, the committee equally promised to ensure efficiency and adherence to due process.

The Chairman of the committee and Solicitor-General of the Federation and Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Justice, Mr Dayo Apata, SAN gave the assurance in Abuja on Tuesday while interfacing with newsmen at a press briefing.

According to Apata, the committee was working assiduously to complete the six months time frame spelt out in the presidential directives.

He said asset recovery and disposal constitutes an integral part of the administration of criminal justice which according to him is all within the purview of the Attorney-General of the Federation.

He said, “It is to be noted that this coordination by the AGF is in line with international best practices, the need for efficient management of recovered assets, and also in furtherance of the exercise of the extant powers and functions conferred on him as the Chief Law Officer of the Federation under Section 150 (1) & 174 (1) of the 1999 Constitution (as altered).

“Since inauguration, the committee has held several meetings and consultations and has worked assiduously to develop its work plan, templates, strategies and modalities, in line with relevant Laws and Regulations, to aid it in the discharge of its mandate within the set time limit.”

Meanwhile, as a way of enhancing transparency, the committee has adopted a communication and media strategy to keep the general public abreast of the committee’s activities.
