We’ll mobilise parties to pressurise PMB to sign Electoral Act – Nwanyanwu

The Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) national chairman, Dan Nwanyanwu, has promised to mobilise other political parties on the platform of the Inter Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) to pressurise President Muhammadu Buhari to sign the amended Electoral Act into law.

Nwanyanwu, who stated this after the IPAC’s election, assured that the political parties and other stakeholders would start early to ensure Mr President does the needful.

He frowned at the current electoral act empowering state governors into winners take all in the conduct of local government and council elections, suggesting that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) takes over the responsibility of conducting the elections.

“It was unfortunate that the amended electoral act before the last general elections. There are lots of changes we expect in the electoral act. We want to change the system whereby the governors take all when they conduct local government election. We must do something to stop it.

“In the last meeting with INEC, my party posited that the responsibility of conducting the election should be taken over by the INEC because most of the governors are not matured to the extent that they should let go even when it is obvious that they should not intervene.

“The process putting budget, conducting local government and local council election is just to fulfil all righteousness. Indeed, the result is always already been written at the government house.

“We don’t want the situation to continue and we will do everything to change it and we will put pressure on the president to sign the electoral act. We need electronic system of voting and those arguing that we are wired across Nigeria are jokers.

“If we don’t adopt electronic voting we are going to encounter the same problem we are having now in the 2023 election. It is those that have benefited in this mundane way of voting that are clog in the will of development.

“But, we are going to start on time this time around. We are not going to wait till 2023, we are going to start now to put the pressure so that everything will be done,” he said.
