WFP, Unicef, others call for resilience, social cohesion in yobe

World Food Programme (WFP), Unicef in collaboration with the Yobe state government have organised a one day workshop on resilience and social cohesion in North-east.

 Blueprint gathered that the workshop which held Thursday at summit conference hall Damaturu, aimed at enhancing peace, increase livelihood opportunities and providing education, health, nutrition, child protection, and sanitation support to strengthen the resilient of vulnerable population in Yobe state.

 In his opening remarks, the head of field office UN world food programme in Damaturu, Dr Agbessi Amewoa, said Unicef and WFP is partnering with yobe to support over 500,000 conflict affected people.

“The Resilience and social cohesion programme will contribute to seven sustainable development Goals (SGDs) of poverty eradication,zero hunger, access to quality education,gender equality,good health and wellbeing,climate action, peace and strong institutions as well as partnership for goal,” he said.

On his part, the Acting head of UNICEF Maiduguri field office, Dr. Clement Adams, said the overview of the project centers on the geographical course of the project which is Bade Local Government Area (LGA) in Yobe state and Shani LGA in Borno state, with an implementation period of three years from July 2022 to December 2024.

“Expected outcomes of the project will enable children, adolescents, women and other vulnerable persons to have improved, inclusive and sustainable access to quality basic services and sustainable livelihood opportunities,” he noted.

Earlier in his welcome address, yobe state commissioner for budget and economic planning represented by the permanent secretary of the ministry, Modu maji Ajiri, noted that the introduction of the project was apt and assured that the state would continue to play it role to see that the objectives of the project are achieved.

He stated that the choice of Bade local government is not a coincidence as it host quite numbers of IDPs within and outside the state.

He said, “The project will go a long way to complement Yobe state government effort, policies and programme of enhancing the well-being of the citizenry.”
