When will NASS entertain the new bills?

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday approved three bills – Constitution Alteration Bill 2018, Electoral Act amendment Bill 2018 and Electoral Offences Commission Bill 2018 – to strengthen electoral process in the country.
The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr.
Abubakar Malami, who disclosed this in Abuja, said the bills would soon be forwarded to the National Assembly (NASS) for passage into law.
However, as important as these bill may seem and in view of the fact that time is of the essence, the question of when will the NASS reconvene to consider the bills cannot be wished away.
Regrettably, the Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki-led NASS appears to have since lost its way as far as legislation is concerned.
Too much time was spent by the lawmakers bickering with the executive to the neglect of the main business of law making.
Still, the FEC must be commended for okaying the bills, especially now that the country faces another round of elections soon.
Particularly, the electoral offences bill cannot have come at a better time than now when, from all indications, corrupt politicians are bracing themselves to rig their way into offices, like they used to do and went unpunished.
But this must stop.
The country must sanitise its electoral process and now is the time to set in motion machinery for attaining that objective.
