Why I ordered total lockdown in Kano – Ganduje

 

Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano state has said he took the decision to completely lock down Kano following the emergence of the much-dreaded Coronavirus which has infected four people as officially confirmed by the medical authorities.

In a press statement in Kano, Ganduje said the lockdown would affect all markets in the metropolitan city of Kano in addition to banning all forms gatherings adding that the one week lock down is subject to review after the week had expired.

According to him, the decision was purposefully effected in the interest of safeguarding public health in the wake of gradual proliferation of coronavirus.

He said the government was compelled to take such painful decision in the face of the prevailing situation

However, with the governor’s pronouncement on the lockdown, reactions from the public have continued to trail the decision.

Some residents described the move as ill-timed, and that it would adversely affect those who have no access to the means to earn a living

According to Malam Shehu Maiagogo of the Muhammadu Abubakar Rimi market in Kano, people patronising the markets in search of the most basic essential commodities would find it hard to cope with the situation talk more of   those who do not even have what to buy the commodity.

Speaking in the same vein, a resident of Sheka quarters in Kano Mr.Alfred Henze said people are currently reeling in the ropes of harsh economic condition as even banks’ account operators cannot withdraw their money without tears.

He said the state government should have palliative measures before taking the decision to lock down the ancient city.

Another trader of the famous Kantin-kwari market, Alhaji Nura Sagagi, who was of divergent view said it was high time everyone accept present bitter reality in the face of the coronavirus disaster.
