Why Kogi PDP may go into extinction – Ex-lawmaker

The Kogi state Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may go into extinction sooner than later if party leaders continue to entrench their personal interests over and above the collective interest of the party ahead of the governorship election in the state.

The fear was allayed by a former lawmaker representing Igalamela/Odolu state constituency Elder Friday Sani Makama, who lamented that the former ruling was daily drifting dangerously from the path to success in the November 16 governorship election.

The governorship aspirant and former chairman Public Accounts Committee of Kogi state House of Assembly condemned in strong terms the attitude of the party leadership stating that they have allowed selfish interest to becloud the party’s sense of purpose and direction.

Sani expressed this feeling in a letter he addressed to and forwarded to the PDP leaders in the state and the National Working Committee (NWC).

In particular, the governorship aspirant alleged that the party was losing credibility over Alhaji Ibrahim Idris fielding his son, Abubakar Ibrahim as a gubernatorial aspirant.

In the letter, he observed that the resultant wrangling was threatening to wreck the party’s structure in the state built over the years as well as break the rank and file of its members.

According to him, the most dangerous outcome of the development, apart from the injection of bad blood among members, it would deny the party victory in the November 16 governorship poll.

“I quite understand the fact that the fact that Igala lost leadership in the PDP as a result of our leader’s quest to promote his son to become the governor of Kogi state,” he said in the letter.

Further, he argued that “the chances of the PDP emerging victorious will dashed if the previous arrangements made in respect of the governorship election were jettisoned.”

To forestall that he said all aspirants contesting the gubernatorial primaries across the state should be given chance of competing for the ticket of the party as guaranteed by both the party and Nigeria constitutions.

Sani subsequently pleaded with the PDP leaders not to allow vested and diverse interests to breed disunity, noting that the current travails in the state, adding that the party should do everything to present a competent flag bearer to fly its flag in the November 16 election.
