‘Why Zakat should be institutionalised in Nigeria’

A lecturer at the Faculty of Law, University of Ilorin, Dr. Folorunsho Ahmad Hussein, has advocated the institutionalisation of Zakat in Nigeria.

Zakat is a religious obligation, ordering all Muslims who meet the necessary criteria to donate a certain portion of wealth each year to charitable causes.

Hussein, who spoke recently in Abuja at the 2nd Maolid Naibby of Ashraaf Islamic Foundation, said Islamic encouraged individual empowerment, adding that Zakat “is the best way to achieve set the target.”

In a lecturer was titled “Islamic perspective on economic development: options for Nigeria, Hussein said Muslims should practise Islam the way it should be practised, particularly in the area of humanity.

He said if all Muslims in the country pull their Zakat together for charitable causes, it would be higher than Nigeria’s annual budget, adding that their kindness to mankind would make them to convert non-Muslims to Muslims.

Hussein, however, called on Nigerians to forget religious sentiments and rather embrace peace, stating that Islam “does not discriminate, but preaches love among neighbours.”
