Wimbledon: Why Halep dethroned me – Serena

Serena Williams admitted she was caught off-guard by the brilliance of Simona Halep as the Romanian blew her away in straight sets to win her first ever Wimbledon title.

The American, who was looking to make history by claiming a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title, was completely dismantled by the faultless Halep as she lost 6-2, 6-2 in the singles final.

Williams came into the contest the fancied favourite, but a very different narrative unfolded on centre court with Halep dominating from start to finish.

Despite the disappointment, Williams, 37, admitted there was little she could do to stop her inspired opponent.

‘She literally played out of her mind! Congratulations Simona,’ Williams said after losing the match.

‘It was a little bit of deer in the headlights from me. When someone plays like that you have to tip your cap and nod your head.’

Halep, who fulfilled her mother’s dream by being crowned the Wimbledon champion, admitted that was the best she has ever played.

When asked if she had ever played better than that by Sue Barker on the BBC, she replied: ‘Never.

‘I had nerves. My stomach was not very well. But I knew there was no time for emotions.

‘It feels unbelievable. It is something so special and I will never forget this day.’
