Woman sues Niger NUJ chair over ‘cheating, breach of trust’

A business woman, Tina Mutun, has dragged the chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Niger state Council, Malam Mohammed Mohammed, to court for alleged breach of trust and cheating. Mutum it was learnt fi led direct criminal complaint against the NUJ chairman and his Auditor, Uriah Gana, at the Senior Magistrates’ Court 5, Minna, accusing them of cheating and criminal breach of trust. The offences contravene Sections 320 and 311 of the Penal Code Law, respectively.

The complainant alleged that she approached Mohammed in 2017 to lease two rooms and an open space for her at the NUJ secretariat also known as IBB Pen House, Minna, during which Mohammed agreed to give out the said apartment to the complainant at an annual rent of N350, 000. Mutum said she paid the amount and was issued receipt signed by Gana, but the union leaders failed to make the place available after collecting the money.

She also said when she could not take possession of the apartment, she demand a refund of her money, but the accused persons only returned N150, 000 leaving a balance of N200, 000. The complainant is seeking an order of the court directing the accused persons to pay the remaining balance of N200, 000 and N250, 000, as damages, as well as N300, 000 as cost of litigation. The case has been slated for April 25, 2018, for mention.
