Women committee solicits 120,000 minimum wage for Police

The National Women Committee of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) has emphasised the need for adequate welfare of the Nigerian Police officers, soliciting for a take home pay of N120,000 minimum for a Police Constable.

National Coordinator, PCRC National Women Committee, Princess Nana Ngozi Dahiru, made the appeal in Abuja at the weekend when she led it’s members on a courtesy visit to the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission.

Dahiru noted that officers of the Nigerian Police performs better outside the country due to a good welfare package and environment, lamenting the poor renumeration of those at home especially with the harsh economic condition.

She said, “Records have proven without an iota of doubt that the Nigeria Police performs impressively on peace keeping missions abroad than they do in Nigeria owing to the comfort of their working environment.

“These aspirations are not rocket science as they are achievable if we all prioritize security of lives and properties over individual selfishness.

“It will go a long way if our politicians cut down their excesses such as aids and wasted convoys and channel them towards the improvement of Police Welfare as a sign of sacrifice for the well being of our great nation.

“We are appealing to all well Nigerians to join hands with in appealing to the government to do the needful concerning police personnel welfare. This will go a long way in achieving internal security in our Great Nation Nigeria.”

Responding, the acting Chairman, Prof. Ekpo Nta, represented by Secretary of the Commission Engr. David Isho Nyikyaa, affirmed the importance of welfare for police officers, saying this will enable them work better and more efficiently considering the nature of their job.

He also expressed worry on the lack of regard to the Police by citizens, stressing that their welfare should be of utmost priority because of the crime rate in the country today.

“We are in a generation where people slap Police men , and armed men will also stone police formations and attack them, unlike before when people respect the police and are calm whenever they see a police officer.

“Issues of their welfare should be on the front burner everytime especially in Nigeria because crime rate is high. When driving home late in the night I always wonder if the people I see on the road are friends or foe but sometimes when I hear the Police sirens I’m reassured and confident that we are safe,” he said.

“Somebody who comes to job unprepared mentally cannot do the job properly, when you get close to some of them on duty you will know it’s welfare issue and this needs to be addressed,” he said.

The PCRC National Women Committee which is a voluntary organisation that discharges its duties with the support of the government, individuals and corporate organizations is saddled with the responsibility of speaking to children and youths to desist from indulging in wrongful acts capable of jeopardising their future.
