The Founder of Women Supporting Women Network (WSWN) Mrs. Toyin Omozuwa, has streseed the need for government at all levels to put in place mechanisms that can support victims and survivors of violence.
Omozuwa made the call in a statement to commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women marked on the theme: ‘Orange the World: Generation Equality Stands Against Rape’.
The statement called on leaders to also address the root causes of gender-based violence, adding that action needed to be taken to protect the human rights of women and girls.
“Government should implement policies and enact laws to end violence and combat the menace of insecurity and torrent of killings in Nigeria,” she said.
Omozuwa maintained that gender-based violence was a great violation of human rights, lamenting that globally, one in three women and girls experience it in their lifetime.
“The most common forms of violence against women in Nigeria include rape, molestation, battery, acid attacks, forced marriage, street harassment, stalking, cyber- harassment, emotional and psychological violenceand femicide.
She noted the recent burning to death of the People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP) Women Leader Mrs. Salome Acheju Abuh in Kogi state, describing the act as barbaric and not justifiable.
She therefore called on the Inspector General of Police to thoroughly investigate the death of Mrs. Salome Abuh and ensure her killers are brought to book.
