World Bank has donated 40,000 units of pre and post-paid digital metres to the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KEDC), to be distributed free to customers in selected areas, which covers Kaduna, Kebbi, Zamfara and Sokoto states.
Managing Director and Chief Executive Officerof KDEC, Malam Idris Mohammed, who made this known during a special commissioning ceremony of third party vending scheme and CAPMI meters project in Kaduna at the weekend, said KEDC had on behalf of its coming successor, North-West Power Consortium (NWPC), officially lunched recharge cards in the units of 5,000, 3,000, 2,000 and 1,000 denominations.
Idris, who said the innovation was born out of passion for customers to be able to recharge their meters from their comfort zones at affordable denominations, added that the development was in tandem with federal government’s transformation agenda on power, in accordance with National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
He said the underground structures put in place in the zone to ensure sustainability of the innovation would guarantee stable power supply, which would be an ‘investors’ delight’.
“We hope our customers will appreciate the efforts we have put in to make sure that this product is available, and should be embraced as a problem solver,” he said.
“This event comes at the appropriate time when FG is making continued efforts to address the challenge of power supply in the country.
“I am happy to say that the FG has put sufficient measures on ground to curtail and address the power related issues in Nigeria, especially in the North west,” he added.
