World Humanitarian day: Actors seek support, women protection

As the world celebrates World Humanitarian day, humanitarian actors in Yobe state have sought for support, protection, structures and policies that would guarantee the rights of women in the crises areas.

Janet Ajala of International Red Cross IRC disclosed this Monday after
a road walk to commemorate the day, in Damaturu, Yobe state capital.

With a theme ‘women humanitarian’, the day was commemorated to remember women who were killed, kidnapped or molested.

She said women need to be celebrated and honoured, saying that despite the challenges faced, they were able to go to front-line to support other most vulnerable women.

She called on the governments and humanitarian agencies to do more by
providing policies and programmes that would support and protect rights
of women.

The agencies condemned in totality the kidnaps and killings of humanitarian workers in the Northeast by the Boko Haram insurgents.

Representative of United Nations Office for the Coordination of
Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Yobe state, Daniel Buba Soro, thanked
Yobe state government for creating a conducive environment for the
humanitarian agencies to operate.

The Executive Secretary of State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA)
Mohammed Goje who spoke at the venue, said Yobe state government and
humanitarian agencies are having cordial a relationship which led to
some of their successes in the state.

Goje, while seeking for intervention, further said as result of the recent flood disaster within two weeks, about 10 local government councils have so far been affected with over 2000 people displaced.
