World Water Day: Yobe govt has achieved 75% water supply – SSG


Yobe state government in collaboration with UNICEF and other donour agencies said they have achieved 75 per cent in water supply according to recent publications made by Bureau for Statistics.

The Secretary to the State Government, Baba Mallam Wali represented by the Permanent Secretary, Political, Baba Ali disclosed this Friday in Damaturu while flagging-off the commemoration of world water day with a theme “Living No-one Behind”.

He, said Yobe state government has recognized the importance of providing clean water that was why Rural Water Supply, and Sanitation Agency RUWASA was established to provide water to the rural areas and
sensitize all on the need for hand washing and discourage open defecation.

“Over 2000 water points across the state apart from the solar-powered boreholes and water treatment plants have been provided. We have rehabilitated boreholes vandalized by the insurgents, and also procured new ones”.

Earlier, the State Commissioner of Water Resources, Engr. Surajo Wakil, said Yobe state witnessed cholera outbreak last year 2018 that
was why 6 boreholes were rehabilitated in Gashua town while those close to the river were all shut down.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Yahaya Inuwa Barde, the Commissioner called on UNICEF and the other donour agencies to strengthen the collaboration in making sure the 2030 target of providing water for all, is feasible.

There were goodwill messages from UNICEF Field Office, drama presentation on hand wash, open defecation and good hygiene by Yobe state Council of Arts culture
