Yahaya assumes duties as COAS

…Build on Attahiru’s legacies – Irabor

Maj.-Gen. Faruk Yahaya formally resumed duties as the nation’s 22nd Chief of Army Staff on Friday.

Yahaya was appointed following the death of Attahiru and 10 other military officers in a plane crash in Kaduna on May 21.

Yahaya took over during a ceremony held at the Army Headquarters, Abuja.

On arrival, he first inspected a guard of honour at the sentry from where he proceeded to the conference room.

Before the commencement of the programme, he led others to observe a minute’s silence in honour of his late predecessor and 10 others who died in a plane crash on Friday last week.

Journalists were thereafter asked to leave the venue.

Meanwhile, the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Lucky Irabor, has urged Maj.-Gen. Yahaya to build on the legacy of his predecessor, the late Lt.-Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru.

He was hosted by Irabor at the Defence Headquarters (DHQ), Abuja, after assuming the duty as the COAS.

According to the Acting Director Defence Information, Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, “The CDS congratulated Maj.-Gen. Yahaya on his appointment as the 22nd COAS, describing it as ‘a well-deserved appointment.’ The CDS also wished him a successful tenure in office as he assumed command. General Irabor further urged the new COAS to build on the legacy of his predecessor, particularly in the fight against insurgency and banditry.

“The COAS was accompanied on the visit by the Chief of Policy and Plans Headquarters, Nigerian Army, Maj.-Gen. Benjamin Ahanotu.

“Highlight of the visit was the CDS’ presentation of the Nigerian Army flag to the new COAS.”
