Yobe assembly set to stage public hearing on VAPP Bill

Yobe State House of Assembly is asking residents to contribute their quota towards a Bill for a law to prohibit all forms of violence against persons, in private and public life, to provide maximum protection and effective remedies for victims and punishment of offenders and other related matters.

The Bill which has undergone different stages, will get a public hearing on Tuesday, November 10, 2020 so as to mitigate all sorts of violence or abandonment deliberately leaving women, children and other vulnerable persons under the perpetrators.

Voices of individuals or groups would be heard on the matter such as sexual assault, circumcision of a girl child, domestic violence, economic abuse, emotional, verbal and psychological abuse, forced isolation from family, harassment, harmful traditional practices among others.

The process which was facilitated by Managing Conflict in Northeast, funded by European Union, noted that the bill was purposely meant to mitigate the alarming rate of violence that allows the perpetrators go free without facing the consequence.

The VAPP bill which provides a legislative and legal framework for prevention of all forms of violence against vulnerable persons was passed into law in May, 2015 by the federal government.
