Yobe Assembly to pass disability bill

Speaker of the Yobe state Assembly, Ahmed Lawan Mirwa has said all is set to pass disability bill, having scaled the second reading.

He said the only thing remaining is for the committee on social development and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to submit its report.

The speaker, represented by the Chief Whip, Ibrahim Buba Kallalawa, stated this Tuesday at a workshop organised for the honourable members to deepen their understanding in inclusion, mainstream inclusion in legislation and oversight for strengthening service delivery.

“Yobe state House of Assembly is committed in promoting welfare of the people of the state regardless of social status and gender.

“We are waiting for the committee to present their report, once that is done, we will give quick legislation because it will rekindle their hope,” he said.

He further said the workshop was an avenue for interaction between the members and other stakeholders, assuring that with the presence of the members at the workshop, the bill will soon see the light of the day.

Speaking earlier, the North-east regional team leader, Partnership To Engage, Reform and Learn-Engage Citizens Pillar (PERL-ECP), Mrs Elizabeth Sara, said the workshop was to deepen and improve the understanding of the stakeholders and to also identify actions that will facilitate the passage of the bill.

“What is dear to my heart is the issue of inclusion; it is a best place to stay if we are inclusive.  This meeting will help us interact with the legislatures for the quick passage of the disability bill,” she said.

PERL-ECP consultant, Jummai Bappah, who presented paper on ‘general understanding of inclusion,’ said the topic will help reflect on what social inclusion is and to discuss on how its non existence will affect development.

There were about 15 members of the state Assembly that attended the sensitisation as more papers were being expected to be presented by the Clerk of the House and other facilitators.
