Yobe: Buni approves immediate recruitment of 37 graduating midwives

Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe state has granted immediate recruitment
of 37 graduating midwives trained in collaboration with Women for
Health as part of effort to reduce the maternal and child mortality in
the state.

The governor made the declaration Thursday at the set two graduation
ceremony and presentation of Foundation Year Programme (FYP)
beneficiaries that graduated at Shehu Sule College of Nursing and
Midwifery, Damaturu.

“We will ensure free maternal and child healthcare, regular supply of
drugs and consumables to our hospitals and we will support all the
active primary healthcare facilities,” he said.

Buni, also approved construction of two-storey building girls hostel
with 200 bed capacity, upgraded the allowances of the students from
N5,000 to N10,000, approved construction of two blocks of classrooms,
office accommodations and toilets, renovation of admin blocks, among
others.

In her remarks earlier, the Provost of the College, Hajiya Hadiza
Sabo, said the 37 midwives went through a five-year rigorous training and have been declared fit to handle midwifery cases.

She further, said it was mandatory for the graduating midwives to serve
in their various indigenous local government councils for two years before they are posted out.

The National Programme Manager, Women for Health, Dr. Fatima Adamu,
represented by Dr. Usman Gwarzo, said insurgency in the Northeast had
reduced the number of midwives, that was why they are partnering the
state to increase health workers to reduce the number of mortality.

Dr. Adamu sought for introduction of incentives to the midwives to
serve as motivation and also for the governor to assent FYP bill.

There was a paper presentation titled “why midwives should be trained”
by the immediate past commissioner of health in the state, Dr. Bello
Kawuwa.
