Yobe Foundation trains actors on sexual, gender violence

The African Youth for Peace Development and Empowerment Foundation (AFRYDEV) with support from Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) has trained traditional and religious leaders, youth and women leaders on sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) prevention and response in Yobe state.

The project, which targeted Potiskum local government council, is a response to human rights violations within the context of counter insurgency in the North-east with funding from Open Society Initiative of West Africa (OSIWA).

It will specifically focus on strengthening SGBV protection and response mechanism in the insurgency affected areas.

Executive Director of AFRYDEV, Miss Maryam Aje, told Blueprint that “the project was aimed at complementing government efforts in addressing GBV issues through capacity building for local actors and establishment of a workable self-sustaining platform for reporting and response”.

Chairman of Potiskum local government council, represented by Malam Lawan, commended AFRYDEV for organising the training, saying SGBV is one of the major issues of concern in every society and required all stakeholders to put hands together in mitigating it.
