Yobe state governor, Mai Mala Buni, has constructed seven ultra-model primary and basic secondary schools across the major cities of the state.
The projects are aimed at decongesting schools in the urban areas that are currently overstretched as result of fleeing Internally Displaced Persons.
He disclosed this through Professor Musa Alabe who is the Executive Chairman of State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).
Eleven years ago, when the boko haram insurgents commenced their onslaught in the northeast, Yobe state had its shares of the disaster in which many schools were destroyed with students massacred.
The situation forced many parents to withdrew their wards from schools in the rural areas while schools in the urban areas were overcrowded.
Governor Buni’s administration believes construction of model schools will help in decongesting pupils in classrooms and increase schools’ enrollment in the insurgency affected areas.
“We want a new approach to the sector, new syllabus, qualified teachers, qualitative buildings to make learning processes easier. We will employ only teachers that are qualified to be able to impact knowledge into the pupils”
“During this period of covid-19, we will undertake lessons in radio and television stations for the pupils while at home” he said.
He also explained, each model school which cost government N300 million is designed to house six classes of five upstairs making a total of 30 classrooms per school in addition to administrative blocks.
The governor had earlier on inception declared state of emergency on education and allocated lion share of its 2020 budget to the sector.
