Yobe moves against tree felling, bush burning, others

Yobe state governor, Alhaji Mai Mal Buni, has stated the government’s resolve to deal with anyone involved in indiscriminate felling of trees, bush burning and improper selling of farmlands.

Governor Buni gave the warning on Wednesday during a state security meeting held at the Government House, Damaturu .

Governor Buni, who was represented by his deputy, Alhaji Idi Barde Gubana, said due to the need to take urgent measures to protect the environment, hence the state government would not condone nonchalant attitude of traditional rulers including district and village heads, ward heads and community leaders with regards to indiscriminate felling of trees.

“Any district head, village or ward head found wanting on this matter may either be seriously punished or even be dismissed from office,” Governor Buni said.

Mai Mala Buni revealed that a high powered monitoring committee under the chairmanship of the deputy governor has been constituted to ensure compliance.

He charged government agencies, traditional institutions as well as the entire citizenry in state to put all hands on deck to ensure that Yobe state vegetation is safeguarded against all inimical activities.

According to the governor, government has reviewed upward the rate of revenue collection from certain items and services to suit current realities.

He said government is also conscious of the important of internal revenue generation in the area of providing services and development to the people of the state.

Mala Buni therefore directed all security chiefs and local government chairmen to ensure good synergy and compliance with full implementation of the new rate of the revenue generation as stipulated by law in their respective domains.
