Yobe: NAFDAC arrests drug hawkers, confiscates product

National Agency For Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in Yobe state, said it has arrested 10 drugs hawkers in Damaturu Sunday market and confiscated their products.

The Coordinator of the agency in the state, Lawan Musa disclosed this Tuesday in a chat with Blueprint.

“As part of our mandates to protect the public from consuming expired drugs, we arrested 10 drug hawkers in Damaturu Sunday market for displaying drugs in baskets under the sun.”

“Drugs are not beans or maize that can be displayed in open places, we are poised to eradicate the era of drugs hawking to safe-guard the public health,” he said.

Musa, further urged the general public not to patronise non-registered medicine sellers, saying it’s very dangerous because they are being exposed to hot temperature and sometimes expires before its original dates.

He, further said there were penalties set by the agency and they are currently investigating their sources of drugs confiscated.

Blueprint learnt, sensitisation campaigns were carried out across the state several times, but some are still adamant.

“Frequently, we have been carrying out enlightenment to the public on the dangers of consuming drugs displayed under the sun, but due to poverty and other factors they prefer buying from the hawkers.”
