Yobe: NGO lauds UNDP for rebuilding burnt schools in Goniri

A non-government organisation on the platform of Humanitarian Platform of Voice and Accountability in Yobe state has commended the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) through its integrated stabilized programme with funding from the government of Canada for rebuilding primary schools burnt down by Boko Haram insurgents in the state.

According to the leader of the humanitarian platform, Ishaku Adamu, who briefed press men Saturday, said they were at Goniri town one of the vulnerable communities and after tracking the education sector, discovered almost all schools building in the area were destroyed.

“Our humanitarian tracking tool helped us immensely to engage donour agencies and government.  UNDP graciously approved and rebuild the schools which accommodate pupils of about 7,000 households in the communities.

“After the rebuilding, teaching activities commenced but we discovered only five out of the thirty three teachers returned due to fear of attacks, that was why we used our tracking template to visit State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) to rescue the situation” he said.

Blueprint gathered as result of the efforts put in place by the
humanitarian platform by engaging the SUBBEB, a committee was set-up recently with voice and accountability as members to visit the schools in those communities for possible posting of teachers to increase manpower in the schools.

The platform therefore called on other donour agencies to emulate the UNDP in making sure all vulnerable pupils return to school.
