Yobe set to reintroduce livestock tax

Yobe state government has Thursday held advocacy and sensitization meeting on reintroduction of livestock tax (JANGALI) and conflict mitigation between livestock and crop farmers in the state.

Presiding over the meeting , secretary to the Yobe state government (SSG)Alhaji Baba Mallam Wali, said for the state to have peaceful coexistence, and avoid the problem of cattle rustlers, there is need to reintroduce livestock tax, saying this could go along way to enhance revenue generation and improve security.

Baba Wali stated that recently,Yobe state governor Mai Mala Buni signed an executive order No 3 for the introduction of the cattle tax in the Yobe state.
He noted that with the implementation of the executive order, a high powered Committee under the chiarpersonship of Commissioner of Agriculture Hajiya Mairo Ahmed Amshi and other important members from various ministries, MDAs, council of chiefs has been set up.

He said, “the meeting purposely is to sensitizes and bring every member of the committee on-board so that at the end, people in the state would now know the benefits of introducing the livestock tax for the purpose of both Security and increasing of revenue generation for the state.”

In her remarks, Hajiya Amshi said, agriculture, livestock and crop production greatly contributed to the development of Yobe state, stressing that it’s an important sector yobe being an agrigerian state.
“Peaceful coexistence is very importance, population is growing,land is stagnant,the need for land for cultivation is growing and the livestock population is also growing that brings a problems and has been the source of conflicts between the posturalist and crop farmers.

“We feel is very important to look into the modalities,once we have this peace,we will now confront to reintroduce and fine modalities to see how we can implement the livestock tax effectively for the benefits of Yobe state, “Mairo said

The advocacy and sensitization Committee on livestock tax also known as JANGALI have S.A Agriculture, Liaison officer Agriculture, 17 local government Council chairmen, traditional rulers, all security heads of the state,All heads of Agriculture and Natural resources, all area Veterinary officers,all area livestock officers and relevant livestock Association respectively.
