Yobe varsity biomedical research centre hosts African summer workshop 

 

Thhe Yobe State University Biomedical Science Research and Training Centre, Thursday, commenced a two-week training workshop on Pan-African Summer School, Open Hardware and Neuroscience Research in the state.

The event which took place in Ibrahim Geidam Hall of the Yobe State University (YSU) drew participants from across Europe, Asia, North and South Africa among other continents.

Speaking at the occasion, the founder Biomedical Science Research and Training Centre, Dr. Mahmod Bukar Maina,  said the overall mission of the centre was to see how the Yobe state university could drive innovation locally, but globally relevant as most of the scientific innovation that people see today are from the global north.

Dr. Mahmoud stated that Africa has lots of potentials but lacked the skills and infrastructure, disclosing: “We established this centre in order to provide infrastructure. We provided lots of equipment from several donors and also using open science approach to build this equipment at low cost so that we can have a sustainable way of driving innovation.

“In terms of skills, this workshop is to give the necessary skills that can enable our local researchers to drive innovation locally in combination to the infrastructure that the state has.”

He commended Yobe state governor, Mai Mala Buni, Secretary to Yobe State Government, Alhaji Baba Mallam Wali and the Vice Chancellor Yobe State University, Prof. Mohammed Mala Daura, for giving all the necessary support for the workshop.

In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor, Yobe State University and chief host of the workshop, Prof. Mala Mohammed Daura said the programme is something that the Yobe state University should be happy with the hosting of people across the globe not only in Nigeria where many from Ghana, UK, USA coming to train for two weeks as a result of the establishment of Biomedical Science Research Centre in the university.
