Yoruba community in FCT sues for peace

The Yoruba Community Council, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has sued for peace in the country, calling on youth to eschew every form of violence while demanding for their rights.

President, Yoruba Community Council (YCC), FCT, Mr. Lanre Ajayi, stated this at the weekend during a press briefing on the recent happenings in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) chapter of the Council. He said Nigerians have the right to demand for their rights, but there is no need for destruction of property because if any violence erupts, it is the children and women that will be more affected.

Secretary of the council, Rashidat Babalola Bello, who briefed the press, stated that the gathering was to bring to public domain the recent happening in the Yoruba community in  FCT and AMAC in particular on allegations of gross misconduct against the AMAC chairman, YCC.

He said: “The executive of YCC, FCT after we met on allegation of misconduct against the AMAC chairman, YCC and disciplinary committee set up to look into the allegations, we arrived that the executive of YCC to stop forthwith with the dissolution and election of new executive of YCC, AMAC, the incumbent executive cannot be dissolved because their term of three years in office has not expired, the tenure is expected to expire November 25, 2020.”

In a swift response to the allegation, the embattled chairman, Alhaji Hammed Olaitan, stated that the FCT council is only threading in error as it is operating on an obsolete constitution that is not bidding on AMAC.

He said: “All the allegations by the president are out of point. Go to the 19 Northern states constitution that the president is making use of, article 10 precisely said when the tenure of an elected officer is expiring, hand over to constituted electoral committee-give them power to conduct fresh election to usher in new executives.

“There is no place where it is stated that FCT should conduct election for the state or state to conduct election for local government or local government for the unit. They have been doing this that does not tally with the constitution.”
