Yoruba community urges NASS to review laws dividing Nigerians

The Yoruba Community in Kaduna state on Thursday called on the National and state assemblies, to remove laws that impede peaceful and harmonious coexistence among Nigerians wherever they are.
The Yoruba community in its reactions to the communal conflict in Shasha Market in Ibadan, reaffirmed its belief in the unity of Nigeria, adding that the overall best interest of Nigerians will only be served through an indivisible Nigeria to which every part and component is unflinchingly committed.

President of the Community, Alhaji Liadi Olayinka Olapade, in a statement also called on the Federal and state governments to work harder to ensure social harmony, dousing tribal hatred and suspicions and engendering trust amongst Nigerians.
“The incident in Shasha Market, Ibadan is now generating anxiety and uneasiness in towns and cities around the country.

Unconfirmed reports showed that several lives and property have been lost to the fracas which root cause cannot be traced to anything other than deep seated prejudices and primordial sentiments.
“While we commiserate with all people affected, we wish to appeal that we all bury our hatchets and begin to lay a foundation for enduring peace and progress in our society.

“We, therefore, wish to call that genuine peace processes should be instituted in Shasha and all other flash points across the country, while initiatives already taken by our governors should be actively supported and promoted by all as the path to communal peace and harmony.

“The Federal and state governments should work harder to ensure social harmony, dousing tribal hatred and suspicions and engendering trust amongst our people. Our legislators at Federal and state levels should set in motion a review of our laws with a view to removing or reviewing those that constitute impediments to our peaceful co-existence.

“On our part, we wish to restate our belief in the unity of the country and affirm our conviction that our overall best interest will only be served through an indivisible one Nigeria to which every part and component is unflinchingly committed. As peace-loving people let us all rededicate ourselves and pray fervently for unalloyed peace and collective progress,” he prayed.
