Youth council lauds NASS over Peace Corps Bill

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has commended the National Assembly (NASS) for finally adopting the bill for an act to establish the Nigerian Peace Corps (NPC). It would be recalled that the bill has been at the Senate Chambers after being passed by both the House of Representatives and Senate since June 2016. Leading a walk in Abuja, President of the NYC Comrade Murtala Mohammed Garba, said the establishment of the NPC bill as an agency of the Federal Government (FG) is apt.

He said “This development has come at a time when the whole world is clamoring for peace and security and as response to increasing complexity and threat to peace and security in Nigeria.” He noted that the bill seeks to empower, develop and provide gainful employmentfor the youths to facilitate peace volunteerism, community services, neighborhood watch and nation-building. He however regretted that some Nigerians were bent on denying youths their rightful position, following the initial controversies around the bill.

“Judging from all thattranspired since the bill was sent to the NASS, passed and now adopted, it was so glaring to all Nigerians, including the youths that some people in the polity, who are averse to the Nigerian youths taking their rightful place in the scheme of aff airs in Nigeria. Th anks to the doggedness and courage of Dr. Akoh, who stood up to their antics,” he said. “With the adoption of this bill, the coast is now clear for the youths to actively participate in the governance structure and development of the nation, which for years have been wantonly mismanaged,” he added. He appraised the doggedness, humility and foresight of the NPC commandant Amb. Dickson Akoh, amidst dauting challenges that confronted him and the corps while waiting for the adoptiin of the bill.
