Youth forum, stakeholders proffer solutions to insecurity

The Unified Nigeria Youth Forum (UNYF) has described as crucial period in the nation’s history spate of insecurity plaguing the nation.

According to the Forum, the current situation called for a moment of national reflection on the core virtues needed in reshaping the country’s future.

UNYF made the observation Thursday at the maiden edition of its Nigeria Youth Forum Annual Lecture cum Award held at Merit house in Abuja.

The event which is themed: Security, Unity and Socio-Economic Development according to the organizer were chosen to arouse sense of responsiveness towards national building.

Giving a keynote address at the programme, the Convener, Mohammed Babatunde Abdulwakeel reemphasized that youth and socio-economic progress can only be achieved in a peaceful stable, secure and enabling environment.

While urging the federal government to further look into the nation’s security architecture to stem the scourge, he said, “ Empowering Nigerian youth will translate to greater well-being for the society and help reduce insecurity and crime”.

Also speaking, one of the discussant and an Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP Nurudeen Sabo admitted that in recent times, security challenges has made the safety of Nigerians to  become a subject of discourse.

Sabo who was an awardee at the event noted that human and material logistics have been overstretched added that spate of terrorism, kidnapping, banditry, armed robbery, cyber-crime among others remain a big concern at all level of government, saying “They are presently being addressed”

Sabo thereafter restated the resolve of all security outfits to continue to work together for a secure environment for the citizens.

In his remarks, Barrister Festus Ofume, also an awardee and a gubernatorial candidate of the Young Democratic Party (YDP) in Delta State at the last general elections advocated that with youth involvement in political developments, insecurity and other vices affecting the nation’s socio-economic development will vanish.

“In their quest for youth friendly policy, Nigerian youth must be part of the process, register in a political party and contest elections”, Ofume added.
