Yunus: Islamic group urges Sultan to intervene

An Islamic youth organisation has reiterated its call for the release of university teacher, Dr. Muhammad Nazeef Yunus, who is facing trial over alleged act of terrorism before a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.

The group, under the aegis, Muslim Youths for Justice (MYJ), in a statement issued on Sunday in Jos, by Ustaz Usman Muhammad Abdullah and Shehu Muhammad, chairman and secretary, respectively, said it was disturbed that the cleric was still in detention, with his health condition deteriorating, while the three youth that were paraded along with him had been released.
It said: “The continued detention of Dr. Yunus is not only worrisome to us and every well-meaning Nigerian that has been following the matter since the date of their public parade.”

“As keen followers and watchers of unfolding events that characterised the aftermath of the arrest of Shiekh Muhammad Nazeef Yunus, a lecturer with the Kogi state University, we are also left with no doubt than to also reiterate his assertion that his arrest was just a set-up and to further say that the DSS is either being misled or it has failed to do the right thing on the issue of its intelligence-gathering to the detriment of Dr. Yunus and his entire family.”
“We are disturbed that even before Dr. Yunus was remanded in Kuje Prison, on the orders of the High Court. As at the last adjournment his health condition suffered serious setback due to his none accessibility to medication which he was on even before his arrest, we are also worried that his long detention in the deadly dusky cell of the DSS, has caused a new illness to his sight.

“While we appreciate the leadership and concern of the President General of the National Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs in Nigeria, Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar of Sokoto, over the matter, we also reiterate our call on him to intervene.”
