Zamfara: AGP rector bags fellow, science association award

The Science Association of Nigeria Monday conferred merit award on the Rector of Abdu Gusau Polytechnic, Talata Mafara in Zamfara state, Prof. Tukur Adamu as a Fellow, Science Association of Nigeria (FSAN).

President of the association, Prof. I. A. Awo at the 53rd annual conference of the Association held at Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto’s Auditorium said Prof. Sani Moh’d Dangwaggo, Prof. Aminu Ibrahim, Prof. Mansur Lawal and Prof. Ademola Adebowale Kayode were among the recipients of the merit awards by the association.

In a statement issued in Gusau by the Public Relations Officer of the Polytechnic, Malam Aliyu Damri and made available to journalists stated that the main theme of the 53 annual conference of the association is “Perspective of Science in the Mitigation of Climate Change and Security Challenges.”

The association further described the recipients as loyal and people of proven integrity and honour who are worthy of emulation.

President of the association, Prof. I. A. Awo congratulated the host university and chief host of the occasion, Vice Chancellor, Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Prof. Abdu Zuru for successful conduct of the conference.

The president called on the federal government and well meaning Nigerians to pay attention on science education, initiate a regulatory body for science and Journal of Science to enjoy the TETFUND intervention.

Chairman of the conference who is also former Minister of Health, Dr Haliru Alhasan charged the association to engage in research and come up with new discoveries on plants commonly found around us. He identified the plants as ‘sanga-sanga’ which cures typhoid fever, ‘Sabara’ that cures rashes and serves as first aid pot and Soborodo for malaria treatment.

Dr Alhasan further stated that cycle cell disease has become a very serious source of worry in hospitals. He charged the association to come up with new discoveries with a view to remedying the problem.

He also called on Sokoto state government to support the association with research grants.
