Zamfara assembly to enact law on social protection

The Zamfara House of Assembly said has it would enact laws to enhance social protection in the state.

The Speaker of the assembly, Alhaji Nasiru Magarya, gave the assurance while receiving social protection stakeholders, who paid him a courtesy visit in Gusau.

These social protection stakeholders from Kaduna state visited Zamfara on a study tour of the state.

The two-day tour was organised under the Child Development Grant Project (CDGP 2) of an NGO, Save the Children International.

Magarya said that the Assembly was ready to partner with development partners to move the state forward.

“We are aware of the activities of Save the Children; we have seen its impacts in our communities. Saving the children is like saving the whole society because children of today are the leaders of tomorrow.

“I, therefore, consider their activities as very beneficial to the society. I have received the draft of the social protection policy; we are going to study it and see how we can give our support,’’ he said.

Earlier, the chairman of Zamfara Social Protection Platform (ZSPP), Alhaji Nasiru Biyabiki, said the team visited the legislators to seek for their support towards enacting a law on the State Social Protection Policy.

Biyabiki said the team comprised government officials, media practitioners, members of civil society organisations and the academia, among others.

Leader of the Save the Children Office from Kaduna, Mr Tanko Muhammad, said the Zamfara Assembly “is the first legislative arm of government to be engaged by the NGO in the country’’.

Muhammad said the NGO needed maximum support from the lawmakers on various activities and programmes with direct impact on the lives of the people. (NAN)
